To improve the reliability and availability of original SC protection and control system and decrease the refurnishing investment, the projects of refurnishing 500kV HeChi FSC protection and control system are carried out. The experiences in refurnishing 500kV HeChi FSC protection and control system are described in the paper. The overall configuration of the SC protection and control system is designed with redundancy. The protection and control functions should be checked in real time digital simulator system, especially for Volt-Ampere curve and cooling down curve of varistor. The triggering test of trigatron should be carried out in factory and field using refurnished gap trigger unit. The electronic current transformers have strong anti-EMI ability, because the A/D converters are integrated with it and the power supply is provided by optical laser from the merger unit on the ground level. And the measuring system is not affected while the disconnect switch is operating or spark gap is flashing over. The artificial single-line-to-ground tests were carried out in DuShan-HeChi line C1 and C2, and the results indicated that the original spark gap could be fast and reliably forced triggered to flashover by the refurnished gap trigger system.
